Matthew Hoffman is an American scholar of rural landscapes and livelihoods, based at the University of Southern Maine in Portland. His work spans three substantive areas — agriculture and food systems; property rights and natural resource management; and community development —united by a theoretical interest in the tensions between market forces, public goods, small-scale ownership, and large-scale challenges. Hoffman was a visiting researcher at the Centre in 2014, and from 2016 to 2017 as a Fulbright Scholar. His collaboration with researchers at CRR is ongoing. Hoffman received his PhD in Development Sociology from Cornell University.
